Promoted by ANCI Sicilia, the Association of Sicilian Municipalities, the Network of Municipal Museums of Sicily was created to enhance the widespread cultural heritage of the Island, preserved in numerous municipal museums that narrate the stories, traditions, and identities of local communities.

Today, the Network brings together over 200 museums across around 100 municipalities, including archaeological and natural history museums, science museums, ethnographic collections, museums of rural civilization and popular traditions, as well as artistic and musical collections. This mosaic of often little-known realities forms a unique and multifaceted narrative of Sicily.

The project stems from the desire to give greater visibility to small local museums, which are not only cultural spaces but also community hubs, safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage that often remains outside mainstream tourist circuits.

Through networking, innovative digital tools, and integrated communication strategies, these museums become true gateways to their territories, highlighting not only their collections but also the communities behind them, with their agricultural products, gastronomy, and artisanal traditions. Every visit becomes an opportunity to discover not only a museum but also the town that hosts it and other locations connected through thematic and digital itineraries.

The Network promotes a form of tourism that is cultural, relational, and experiential, going beyond traditional routes to offer an authentic journey interwoven with local stories, folklore, and heritage. Importantly, the project is not addressed only to visitors: the Network was also conceived to strengthen the bond between museums and their communities, encouraging citizens to actively participate in the preservation and promotion of their heritage, and fostering pride and a shared sense of belonging.

Innovation and accessibility are at the heart of the project: QR-code audioguides, georeferenced online portals, integrated ticketing, training for museum staff, and other tools will contribute to making the museum experience modern, inclusive, and sustainable, offering even the smallest towns a replicable model of cultural development.

The Network of Municipal Museums of Sicily is therefore more than just a cultural initiative: it aims to be a laboratory of community and identity, combining history, innovation, and participation to narrate Sicily through the voices and memories of its people and territories.
